DISTRIBUTION

This rare species is typically found in arid regions throughout the western United States to Mexico, with its core range defined by the extent of the Great Basin Desert region. In Canada, SPOTTED BAT occurs only in southern BC, mainly in the Okanagan, Similkameen, Thompson, Fraser and Chilcotin river valleys. However, it has also been acoustically recorded through the North American Bat Monitoring Program in the Skagit Valley, with several recordings made in 2018 and 2019 around Ross Lake, and in the Kettle River valley north of Rock Creek. In the Fraser River valley, it is found in open bunchgrass valley bottom and sparsely forested mid-bench areas dominated by PONDEROSA PINE and Interior DOUGLAS-FIR trees. Along the Fraser River, its range extends from Lytton north to near Sword Creek, west of Williams Lake. On October 1, 2021, the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC rescued an adult female SPOTTED BAT found roosting for several days on a balcony in Chilliwack, approximately 3.5 km from the Fraser River. It is not known if this was a migrating bat.
